Testing Swimming Pool Tile Quality

Recently I was discussing on an online forum regarding on how to check swimming pool tiles quality. I found many interesting answers and views which I was willing to share on my blog. As being a glass mosaic bathroom tile manufacturer I really got interested in this topic.

Pools fountains and other water features have been installed with cement grouts for over a century. And while various new industry installation recommendations use materials with less absorption for waterproofing, installing and grouting pool tile your statement, in my opinion, flies in the face of years and years of successful water feature installations.

Tile Council Of North America's (TCNA) pool tile installation recommendations P601 & P602 have varying levels and options of waterproofing, setting and grouting materials and a few options of which side of the mortar bed to place the waterproofing, if a mortar bed is specified.

You may want to brush up on the pool tile installation recommendations in the TCNA "2012 Handbook For Ceramic Tile Installation". This is one of the references your likely to bump into if your involved in a pool tile issue.

Also, Im not sure how testing the tile alone and not all the components together in a system specified is going to give any indication as to "water tightness".

Additionally, the new ANSI 137.2 manufacturing standard for glass tile has a great shear bond test that can be utilized for net backed and other submerged tile applications. Look at ANSI 137.2 - 7
